Madrid Zoo Aquarium will offer informative talks from November 10 to 16 and a monographic course on primates

He orangutan from Borneo (I put pygmaeus pygmaeus) could become one of the first great apes to disappear. Thus, from November 10 to 16 and on the occasion of the world event Orangutan Caring Week, Madrid Aquarium Zoo joins the World Orangutan Events (WOE) initiative in collaboration with the Orang Utan Republik Foundation to raise awareness about the causes that are leading to the extinction of these animals and to know what we can do to avoid it.

And is that of the 325,000 copies located in Borneo and Sumatra that were counted at the beginning of the 20th century, according to data from the International Union of Conservation of Nature (IUCN), its population has been seen reduced to 45,000-55,000, nowadays. A worrying situation, close to extinction, which has occurred in parallel to the destruction and deforestation of the rainforests where they live, with an 80% decline in their territory in just two decades. To report this situation, Zoo Aquarium of Madrid will offer informative talks, from November 10 to 16, and a monographic course on primates, the weekend of November 15 and 16, where this serious problem will be addressed along with another of the main causes of its extinction, the illegal capture of young that are sold as pets in Indonesia.

Through the different educational activities that will be carried out, Orangutan Caring Week will have as its protagonist the orangutan family of Zoo Aquarium of Madrid formed by the male dahi, the Surya and Kedua females and the last pups born in 2010 and 2012 called Sungay Y Boo.

In this way the Borneo orangutans installation The Zoo will become the information point of this call to action.   • November 15 and 16: monograph on management, primate maintenance and conservation intended for university students and the general public. From 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and requires prior registration
