When the scalpel of the caesarean section also leaves a wound in the baby

Cesarean delivery is the one that is carried out when professionals consider that vaginal delivery can be dangerous for the life of the baby or the mother. It is a major intervention, an operation, and as such is associated with several risks for both the mother and the baby.

One of the risks for the baby is that, at the time of the incision, something goes wrong and the gynecologist not only open the mother's abdomen, but also injure the baby, as has happened recently in Paraguay, where a baby had to be sutured at birth after receiving a large cut on his head (the photo can be seen below).

When do you think childbirth is dangerous?

I just said that a C-section is the intervention that is carried out when professionals consider that vaginal delivery can be dangerous for the life of the baby or the mother, but we all know that this is not true in all cases, and That is why the fact that a baby takes a cut on the head is news. If caesarean section was really done only in those cases where it is required, the possibility of this happening would be a lesser evil, an assumable risk, that of weighing the risks and the benefits, and we would not talk about it.

But it doesn't happen that way. Many celebrities give birth by caesarean section because it is already known, "who pays, sends", in many countries the caesarean section is the order of the day and it is almost more strange to give birth vaginally than by caesarean section, when WHO estimates that only one in ten women would have to give birth in this way. If even in Babies and more we have had times where many women left comments explaining how fabulous it was to have a C-section! Their doctors, of course, had lied to them explaining that it was best for them and the baby to give birth in that way.

When the scalpel reaches the baby

The risk of this happening is not very high. As we saw in the video of what a C-section is like, the scalpel is actually used very little, at the beginning to open the skin and at the end, to open the uterus, with a very small cut. The rest opens with the hands. That is why they are usually relatively small wounds, although sometimes they are considered of severity depending on where they occur. A wound in the back is not the same as a wound in the head or directly on the face, which will be seen throughout life.

In the case of the photo, which happened at the Hospital de Clínicas de San Lorenzo, the baby required 10 stitches. If you look at the picture, the scar, with respect to the baby's head, is quite important. As explained from the hospital, the wound was superficial, the baby was treated immediately and the cause was due to the delivery was attended urgently and the rush to get the baby caused the injury.

That is, it is something that happens from time to time. According to some studies in this regard, the incidence, the risk of a baby suffering an injury or injury during caesarean section is between 1.9% and 3.12%.

Therefore, and for all other associated risks, Caesarean section should be done, really, when necessary, and not for economic reasons (a hospital charges more money if it does more caesarean sections) or other.
