Trampolines: they are fun, but they have their risks

The trampolines provide hours of fun for the little ones, especially in summer, but they are not harmless. According to EU data, there are about 51,000 injuries in children under 14 years of age related to trampolines that are serious enough to go to the emergency room.

Most accidents occur in trampolines installed in homes and the most vulnerable to serious accidents, and even deaths, are children under 6 years. Trampolines are fun, but they have their risks. We give you some tips to use them safely.

The most frequent injuries on trampolines are caused by a colliding child with another, by a bad fall or by a fall outside the trampoline. Since the fall is not predictable, any part of the body can be injured (neck, arms, legs, face and head), but without a doubt the most dangerous are the neck and head.

The majority of accidents, 75%, occur when there is more than one child using the trampoline. Those who have less weight are more likely to be injured.

Avoid accidents on trampolines

If you are going to install a trampoline at home, there are some tips you should keep in mind to prevent accidents.

  • Check that it meets the European requirements stipulated in standards EN 913: 2008 and EN 13219: 2008 (Gymnastics equipment) and that it has a safety net to prevent falls out of bed against the floor.

  • Make sure that all metal parts are covered by padded protectors and that there are no holes where any part of the body can get stuck.

  • Place the bed on a flat, soft surface that absorbs impacts and away from fences, trees, cement structures or other games.

  • The access door to the bed should always be closed, and avoid access stairs so that the little ones cannot climb alone.

  • Always an adult watching: although adult supervision does not prevent accidents, it considerably reduces the risk of its occurrence.

  • Remove any necklace, tape or object that could get caught or hurt them when jumping.

  • Always use a person's bed, in turns. This is what less grace will do to them, but most accidents occur when used by many children at the same time.
