One study shows that postpartum depression also affects men

With the birth of the children, a series of great changes in the couple arrives and a period of adaptation begins in which everyone will learn and know a new way of life. During this stage, the famous postpartum depression appears in some women. But is something similar happening with parents?

One study found that they may also experience postpartum depression. We tell you what it is about.

Although when talking about postpartum depression, the first thing that comes to mind is mothers, for some years there has been talk that it can also appear in men after becoming fathers.

A recent study, which was published in the scientific journal Hormones and Behavior, and in which 149 couples from the United States participated, found that parents also experience hormonal changes after the birth of their children, which could eventually lead to depression.

The results of this study show that the men who present low testosterone levels nine months after the birth of children, are more likely to suffer from postpartum depression. But in addition, the level of testosterone not only influences them, but also their partners.

Curiously, Those who have low testosterone levels have a positive effect on mothers, because it was found that their partners had fewer symptoms of depression at nine and fifteen months after delivery.

Conversely, men who had higher levels of testosterone were stressed more and showed a tendency to behave more hostile towards their partners, thus influencing the probability that they suffered postpartum depression.

This study reaffirms not only that it is possible that parents also suffer from depression after having children, but that man also experiences changes at the biological level when he becomes a dad.
