How to prevent a heat stroke in babies and children

Any person can accuse the effects of the sun or heat, but some specific cases are more exposed, and among them children under 6 years old and newborns, very prone to temperature changes.

When excessive and continuous exposure to heat or sun is not well tolerated by a person and causes shock, we talk about "heatstroke". You can alter metabolic functions, heart or lungs that cause major health problems, especially, as we say, in those most vulnerable people.

But we can prevent a heat stroke by following these tips which apply to all who want to mitigate the consequences of high temperatures. In general, these are measures that favor the body's cooling mechanisms and ensure an adequate state of hydration.

  • Repose: prevent children from exercising when it is hotter, in the central hours of the day. If you go out with the little ones, you will have to rest in the shade or in cool, ventilated places.

  • Clothes: It is recommended to wear light clothing, wide, if possible cotton, breathable, and light colors, which absorb less heat.

  • Outdoor protection: The head must be protected with a hat that allows perspiration. On the beach or field, you should try to avoid the center of the day, from 11 to 17 hours approximately, and rest under the umbrella, in addition to protecting the skin with a sunscreen. Sunglasses will also protect the eyes of the little ones.

  • At home: It is advisable to close the advantages and throw the curtains on the facades exposed to the sun. The windows must be closed while the outside temperature is higher than the inside. It is convenient to open them at night, when it cools, to ventilate the house. Try to stay in the cooler rooms, especially in the central hours of the day.

  • Refresh: showering or bathing with fresh water, wet face and hands, stand before a fan or put the air conditioner at a pleasant temperature ...

  • Feeding: to hydrate, eat lots of fresh and cooked fruit, vegetables and vegetables. It is necessary to anticipate the sensation of thirst and to offer to the small ones frequently abundant liquids (the healthiest, water and natural juices). Excessive sweat causes us to lose more fluid than usual, so we have to drink more.

  • In the newborn babies, the sweat is not so visible because we say that "your thermostat", the system of regulation of its temperature, is still immature, so we must take special care that they are well hydrated and be attentive to symptoms of dehydration.

  • Finally, never leave a baby or child locked in the car for five minutes, much less in summer. Its body temperature rises rapidly producing a serious risk of hyperthermia, which can cause death in a short time.

Following these tips, the little ones and us we will enjoy the summer without scares.
