Return of personal income tax for maternity and paternity: how, when and where to request it

After more than two months waiting for the form that will facilitate the return of personal income tax in maternity and paternity benefits, it is finally available from Monday, December 3. We tell you what do you have to do to request a refund, the deadlines you have, where and how to do it.

What do I have to do to request it?

The Treasury will not make the default refund, which means that you must request it through the form posted on its website.

The elaborated tool simplifies all the procedures, so you will not have to provide any additional documentation. You just have to fill in the form with the year in which the benefit was received and the bank account number where you want the return to be made.

How to submit the form?

To access the form GZ283 form, the reference number of the last declaration of the Income -or REN0 certificate-, the PIN code, or the electronic certificate will be required. The reference number (RENØ) can be requested on the AEAT website on the Internet indicating the ID number and box 450 of the 2016 income statement

The form can be submitted online or it can also be downloaded, printed, filled in on paper and submitted at the tax agency's offices.

Who can request it?

Fathers and mothers who received the benefit in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017, a four-year term established by law to rectify the Income statement.

For Those born in 2014 and 2015 can be requested from December 3. As of January, parents of babies born in 2016 and 2017 may request it.

Taxpayers who have had withholdings for maternity and paternity benefits of 2018 should not perform any particular procedure. Your 2018 Income statement, which is filed in 2019, will already incorporate the benefits as exempt income and the withholdings withheld will be deductible.

What deadlines do I have?

Taxpayers who paid for the IRPF of the maternity benefit in 2014 will have until June 30, 2019 to request the return, at which time the 2018 income campaign will end. Those who received it in 2015 will have until June 2020 and so on.

Even so, according to comments from the Minister of Hacenda, María Jesús Montero this morning, the online form will only be available during December for the beneficiaries of 2014 and 2015 and during January for the following, so it encourages meeting the deadlines to collect sooner.

When will they return me?

According to the Minister of Finance, María Jesús Montero, it is believed that the returns requested online may be resolved and paid before april.

The Treasury warns that the process may be slower if the request is submitted in writing at the offices of the Tax Agency.

How much will they give me back?

The average return of this benefit will be around 1,600 euros for maternity and 383 paternity, and will have an expense of "around 1,200 million euros", according to explanations from the Minister of Finance María Jesús Montero.

The technicians of the Treasury, meanwhile, estimate that only 17,% of the mothers and fathers affected between 2014 and 2017 will benefit from the exemption from personal income tax in maternity and paternity benefits.

It is estimated that less than 200,000 mothers and fathers will receive 266 million for the withholdings made by the Treasury since 2014, to which the corresponding default interest will be added, if they are entitled.

That is to say, according to the General Tax Law, the corresponding interest will be paid to those whose income tax return will be paid. Taxpayers to whom the Rent would return to them, will not receive additional interest.
