We take a look at the labeling of the 4-month Ordesa products (I)

A few weeks ago we were talking about Nestlé and Hero's 4-month baby products. In the inkwell there were a few more brands, so today we continue with one of them, Ordesa.

Laboratorios Ordesa is a Spanish infant feeding company that markets formula milk and cereal porridge, with a wide range of variations (with fruit, without fruit, with gluten, without gluten, with oatmeal, with calcium, with honey, etc).

Given this variety it can be interesting have a look at the labeling of your products In case some conclusions can be drawn and to know what we are really acquiring and what we are going to give our baby if we are consumers of these infant foods.

Food products for 4 months

As I said in previous entries, all brands of child food sales commit the same irregularity: label complementary food products with the stamp "from 4 months."

Complementary feeding should be offered to babies when they are ready to receive it, that is, when they can more or less sit, have an interest in food, lose the extrusion reflex and are able to show hunger and satiety (turn their heads). All this it doesn't usually happen before six months.

In addition, an early introduction of food causes babies to eat less complete foods than milk and with a greater load of solutes and proteins, which overload the kidneys.

Blevit Plus Gluten Free

For some time now many brands have been manufacturing cereal porridge through the enzymatic hydrolysis process, which keeps them more properties, tastes better (and therefore no need to add sugars) and makes them more digestive.

Blevit also uses this system. As he explains on his website “They have been dextrined through an exclusive enzyme hydrolysis system”, although not in all cereals and we observe, in the ingredients, that despite this process, sugar is added to the mixture in many of his porridge (nothing recommended at 4 months).

The ingredients of this porridge are: “Dextrinated cereal flour 81% (Rice and Corn), Sugar, Dextrinomaltose, 3% Fructooligosaccharides, Mineral Salts (Calcium, Iron), Vitamin Complex (Vitamins: C, Nicotinamide, E, Calcium Pantothenate, B6, B2, B1, A , Folic acid, K, Biotin, D, B12), Aroma. Made in a factory that uses: Milk, soy and nuts. ”

We can see that the manufacturing is carried out in a factory where the porridge could be "contaminated" with milk, soy and nuts. In other words, they are potentially allergenic cereals that children should not take, at least up to twelve months, in order to avoid allergic reactions to milk proteins, to some dried fruit such as peanuts or soybeans, which are the most allergenic foods of childhood (especially milk and peanuts).

Blevit Plus Fruits

It is a cereal preparation with fruits, which is advertised with the slogan: "For the introduction of fruits in the diet". Very commendable intention, although I think we all agree if we say that to introduce the fruit in the diet, the ideal is to eat fruit directly. If we do so, the fruits maintain their properties, their components (as important as fiber) and so the children learn what the fruit tastes like, what it is, what temperature it is, what color they are, what touch they have, etc.

If we look at the ingredients of this porridge we observe the following: “Dextrinated cereal flour 72% (rice and corn), Sugar, Fruit Pulps 25% (Orange, Apple, Banana, Pineapple, Pear, Kiwi), Fructooligosaccharides 3%, Mineral salts (Calcium, Iron), Aromas, Vitamin Complex (Vitamins: C, Nicotinamide, E, Calcium Pantothenate, B6, B2, B1, A, Folic Acid, K, Biotin, D, B12). Made in a factory that uses: Milk, soy and nuts. ”

We see again that these cereals contain sugar (other brands have already banished it in their cereals) and pulp of six different fruits. This makes it undesirable to offer it to a baby if you have not already tried them all, since if this porridge produced an allergic reaction it would be very difficult to make an association between the reaction and the causative ingredient.

Also among those six fruits we find pineapple and kiwi, fruits that babies could start to take towards six months if the mother has been a habitual consumer throughout her life (if not, better offered from the year).

We also observe, as with the other porridge, that it may contain traces of milk, soy and nuts.

Blevit Plus Rice

It is a gluten-free porridge whose main ingredient is rice. Its purpose is to provide an astringent food to offer the baby in case of diarrhea.

The ingredients are: "Dextrinated cereal flour 86% (rice), Sugar, Fructooligosaccharides 3%, Mineral salts (Calcium, Iron), Vitamin Complex (Vitamins: C, Nicotinamide, E, Calcium Pantothenate, B6, B2, B1, A, Folic Acid, K, Biotin, D, B12), Aroma. Made in a factory that uses: Milk, soy and nuts. ”

There is not much to say that we have not already said in the other porridge. It carries sugar and carries risks of allergies because it can contain traces of milk, soy and nuts.

Blevit Plus Superfiber range

It is a gluten-free porridge, with rice and corn, which has the peculiarity of containing Integral rice, which contains much more fiber than white rice. This makes the recipients of this type of porridge are babies with constipation (hard stool).

Other babies should not take this porridge for the amount of fiber they may contain. Whole foods are usually offered to children from two years of age in small quantities so that they gradually assimilate the amount of fiber they contain.

The ingredients are: “80% dextrinated cereal flour (Brown Rice and Corn), Sugar, 3% Fructooligosaccharides, Mineral Salts (Calcium, Iron), 2% Inulin, Vitamin Complex (Vitamins: C, Nicotinamide, E, Calcium Pantothenate, B6, B2, B1, A, Folic acid, K, Biotin, D, B12), Aroma. Made in a factory that uses: Milk, soy and nuts. ”

Like the rest, it carries sugar and could contain traces of milk, soy and nuts.

Blevit Plus fruits Superfiber range

It is like the previous porridge but with the addition of the six fruits that we already saw in the cereal porridge with fruits mentioned above.

I think that looking at the ingredients you will draw the same conclusions as me: “Dextrinated cereal flour 68% (Brown Rice and Corn), Sugar, Fruit Pulps 25% (Orange, Apple, Banana, Pineapple, Pear, Kiwi), Fructooligosaccharides 3%, Mineral Salts (Calcium, Iron), Inulin 2% , Aromas, Vitamin Complex (Vitamins: C, Nicotinamide, E, Calcium Pantothenate, B6, B2, B1, A, Folic Acid, K, Biotin, D, B12). Made in a factory that uses: Milk, soy and nuts. ”

Given the Ordesa It has an extensive offer of baby products, we will continue with them another day in another entry.
