Prevent obesity from the community level

Several studies conducted in various places with children have shown that an intervention from the community level is effective for the prevention of childhood obesity (We talk about measures carried out outside schools or health centers).

In almost all of them there are improvements, although modest, in behaviors related to food and physical exercise. But if we add to these small improvements those that can be achieved in the school, in the family, in the health sector ... we will be taking great steps towards the prevention of childhood obesity and the achievement of healthier habits.

These are the recommendations for a performance from the community level that have been proven effective in preventing obesity. They involve multiple agents, from the food industry to advertising or public authorities and their investment in programs and facilities.

  • In the child and adolescent population, the restriction of sugary drinks and the promotion of community programs that favor their reduction and contribute to water consumption are recommended.
  • Measures by the competent authorities are recommended to restrict the supply and promotion of food products that are high in unhealthy fats or sugars (sugary drinks, pastries, delicatessen products, etc.).
  • It is recommended to encourage production and accessibility to fruits and vegetables through fiscal policies or subsidies.
  • The control of advertising directed to minors of products with a high content of unhealthy fats or sugars is recommended. We have already seen that advertising is a key factor in the increase in childhood obesity.
  • The obligation to label processed foods with nutritional information and potential health effects is recommended.
  • In the child and adolescent population the establishment of physical activity programs outside school hours, adapted to age and preferences.
  • In the child and adolescent population, the establishment of community programs aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle, healthy eating and the practice of physical activity is recommended.
  • The creation of safe and pleasant spaces is recommended, as well as adequate infrastructure for games and sports in public spaces, for children and adolescents.
  • It is recommended to promote specific actions (free, aid ...) to facilitate access to municipal sports facilities for children, adolescents and family members of socially disadvantaged groups.

As we see, preventing obesity is a task in which the whole society is involved, and we will return to this topic to realize how health and family are other important keys in this objective.
