Trip to Lisbon with children, what visits are recommended?

Some time ago I went to the Portuguese capital with my daughters and although they were very small and we could not enjoy all their possibilities, it became clear to me that Lisbon is a lovely city also to go with children. Today we travel back to the city to see the plans that we can enjoy with the little ones.

It is not only about visits to museums or exhibitions, but also some experiences that you will enjoy to the fullest, from getting on the mythical tram 28, watching dolphins or riding a cable car. Without forgetting, of course, the simple walk through the cobbled neighborhoods of Lisbon or discover its cuisine, which offers so many delicacies, as a family. Are you ready for travel to Lisbon with children?

Lisboa Story Center for children

The Lisboa Story Center is an interpretation center dedicated to the history of the capital, located in the heart of the city, in the popular Commerce Square. Here the children will make an educational trip through time and get to know the city through its interactive model, on which touching is allowed.

In the 4-D theater the whole family will enjoy an immersive show. A series of multimedia and sensory experiences account for the main events of the city's memory, such as the earthquake of 1755, with historical rigor and spectacularity.

They will also be introduced to the environment of a 16th-century Lisbon warehouse, to discover products from the New World, in the legends and myths related to the city, they will see a virtual Lisbon before continuing to explore it in situ ...

Parks and gardens in Lisbon

In Lisbon we find different parks and gardens where children can run at ease and all give us a break, rest for a while to continue exploring the city. Centrally located is Eduardo VII Park, 25 hectares full of places of interest, with great views of the lower part of the city and in the background the Tagus, or the Cold and Hot Stove, beautiful botanical gardens, ponds with ducks and Peacocks, playground for children ...

On the outskirts is the forest park of Monsanto, the lung of the city, where maybe we can see squirrels or some theatrical or musical performance and in any case enjoy a relaxing walk surrounded by nature. We also find restaurants, picnic areas, playgrounds, trails ...

St. George's Castle

Symbol of the city, observable from much of Lisbon, this fortress that stands on one of the seven hills of Lisbon is a piece of history that kids love to look out, enjoying the views or photographing next to the spectacular canyons. A trip from the Iron Age to the present that is worth it.

To get to the Castle of San Jorge we can walk through the beautiful neighborhood of Alfama, although the climb is somewhat slow if we go with a baby carriage, because there are so many ascending and the cobbled floor of the historic center (and much of the city ). It can also be accessed by bus or tram.

Travelers to the tram!

Precisely to Castelao de Sao Jorge and many other points of tourist interest, the mythical tram 28 brings us closer, a trip that we can enjoy if it is not too crowded. In general, getting on the tram in Lisbon will be an experience that the little ones like and don't miss the elevators, with that old noble wood air inside, to reach some high parts of the city.

The Lisbon Oceanarium for children

We moved to the Park of Nations, because there you can visit the second largest aquarium in Europe, which hosts hundreds of species such as sharks, rays, blankets, tropical fish ... In the Atlantic Pavilion we will find this spectacular space dedicated to promoting environmental conservation.

Knowledge Pavilion

We continue in the Parque de las Naciones because there is another museum waiting for us to enjoy with children: the Pavilion of Knowledge and Living Science. It is an interactive museum of science and technology, in which children can observe scientific experiments, build their own houses ...

Climb by cable car

We can't leave the Park of Nations without getting on the cable car, a walk along the Tagus with spectacular views of the Park from above. I was able to climb with a baby carriage and it is a short walk (relatively, since it travels 1300 meters between the Vasco da Gama Tower and the Oceanographic) but intense.

National Museum Two Cars

We now move to the other end of Lisbon, to the charming neighborhood of Belém, where apart from being able to enjoy the most delicious cream cakes you can imagine, we will know a very special museum.

The National Two Cars Museum It is one of the most visited museums in Lisbon and hosts a wide collection of carriages dating from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries and that will transfer the whole family to movie theaters ...

National Archeology Museum

We are not going very far, because in Belém we also approach an indispensable and unique Heritage, Jeronimos Monastery. In the same building is the National Archeology Museum, where the little ones will be amazed by the Egyptian mummies, the sarcophagi, real treasures, gold objects, vessels, sculptures ... and all kinds of archaeological pieces that range from the Paleolithic to the Middle Ages.

Lisbon Zoo

We can't leave the city without a place that will love animal lovers, the Lisbon Zoo. In this zoological garden we find hundreds of species from all over the world, activities for children, a cable car ride to enjoy from the heights, show with dolphins ...

An excursion to see dolphins by boat

But if we want to see dolphins in freedom, we can also do it in our trip to Lisbon with children. Leaving Lisbon but a short distance to the south of the city, there is the Sado River Estuary. Here small nature lovers can see in their habitat a unique species in Portugal, bottlenose dolphins.

It is a Nature Reserve Area in which the “rodent rodents” (so called by the local fishermen because they gnaw the fishing nets and feed mainly on sea bass) roam freely. There are different options for boat trips on the estuary.

We hope this stroll through Lisbon with children I encourage you to know the Portuguese capital, full of charms for the whole family. You will want to come back to continue exploring it, as it happened to us ... and when they grow a little go to a good fado show. Boa viagem!
