The most frequent girl names in the US from 1880 to 2013 (and in Spain and Mexico)

Choosing your daughter's name can be an odyssey unless you have it clear before pregnancy. Even if you are clear, you may have problems, because the decision is a thing of two and sometimes the other can tell you that of "no, I know one that is called that and ..." and then you have to look for another name, sometimes even going to books or lists of names.

Listings of names, such as those that show us each year how often a name is used (which helps those who do not want to put a very common name and those who do), and as we can see in the video that you I bring today, which with funny and hypnotic bubbles allows us see what are the most frequent girl names in the US from 1980 to 2013.

The data comes from the annual census and the names are arranged in bubbles that change in size according to the frequency. The color of the bubbles responds to the initial letter and to the right of the video we can see the important events that happened every year, many related to the names.

In the 1930s, for example, Shirley Temple became a child star, because at that time there were more girls with that name. In the year 47, the song "Linda" by Buddy Clark reached number one and the consequence is that it was also the most popular name. Similarly, after the song Michelle of the Beatles, in 1965, the frequency of the name increased markedly and so with several events in history.

It is curious to see that in recent decades and especially in recent years, the frequency is greatly diversified, something we see in the size of the bubbles. In 2007, for example, no name exceeds 1 percent and, according to the census, the first 100 names on the list do not cover even a third of all girls born that year.

The video ends in 2013, when the most popular names are Sophia, Emma, Olivia, Isabella and Ava.
