Study on the influence of environmental pollution on future babies

In Guipúzcoa you are studying how environmental pollution influences the development of babies Of 600 future moms, this study will be completed when the children turn 4.

For an adequate development of the baby everything influences, nutrition, the rhythm of life and even the air we breathe, precisely the air is one of the factors that are being studied to find out how it influences the development of the baby.

The new project tries to reveal in detail the relationship between the air present in the environment of different parts of Spain and the health of babies. The growing concern about some diseases in childhood and exposure to different contaminated environments, led to this study being initiated three years ago in Barcelona, Valencia, Granada and Asturias, where the city of Guipúzcoa has just been incorporated. It is important to determine the relationship between the level of contamination and the exposure that babies suffer during pregnancy and early childhood, some of the compounds that have direct contact with the mother through the air can pass to them.

All kinds of samples are taken, blood, hair, nails, urine ... In addition, an exhaustive follow-up is done on each mother's diet, the daily routine they perform, the environments where they usually move, etc. All data will be used to prepare a detailed study showing the relationship between pollution and babies.

Depending on the place where a future mother lives, the air can be loaded with various substances such as lead, arsenic, trihalomethanes, hydroxypyrene or organic compounds among others. All these substances may be related to some respiratory diseases, if so, a strategy could be developed to eliminate these risk situations.

Each new study, each new finding, is one more step to ensure that our children come properly to the world.
