Postpartum depression to the point of killing your child?

Postpartum depression is a serious thing. It is a very traumatic circumstance for the mother who suffers as well as for her partner, although unfortunately sometimes it is related to the easy complaint and the lack of strength of the woman to assume her motherhood.

It affects more mothers than we think, two out of every three women who have given birth recently suffer to a lesser or greater extent, but one of the biggest problems is that in many cases it is not detected.

It is triggered by the anxiety produced by the demand caused by the arrival of the new baby. It can range from a depression, a mild depression (also called baby blues), to a very strong depression and even to a peurperial psychosis.

Everyone lets us know that a postpartum depression can lead to a tragedy as fat as the one that jumped yesterday in the media: the news of a 32-year-old mother from La Palma (Canary Islands) who allegedly he suffocated his six month old baby because he was going through a depression.

The psychologist María José Herrera points out in an interview that depression does not justify a parricide, it says that it is not explained if there is no associated serious personality disorder or psychotic symptoms.

My concern is can depression be so strong as to upset a woman to the point of killing a child she wanted so much? The neighbors say that she was a model couple, that the girl was very wanted and that they had even undergone a treatment to get pregnant.

As I said at the beginning, postpartum depression is a serious thing. The emotional state of women should be more controlled after childbirth so that doctors can detect it in time and thus avoid tragedies like this.

For women who suffer from it, the fundamental thing is to seek support from the couple, family members, help groups and professionals.
