You can be a mother at 50

It is true that due to the pace of life we currently live, the age of having children has been delayed considerably. A few decades ago it was unthinkable that a woman had a child beyond 40 years. Today, however, it is a fairly frequent fact, we even have moms around 50.

So far, 50 years, because it is the age at which the woman is close to menopause, it is considered that a pregnancy can be quite dangerous for both the baby and the mother. But surprisingly, this week at the annual Congress of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology, which has taken place in Barcelona, a debate has been opened on whether it should be considered to extend the reproductive age of women to 50 years. Apparently, two of the best researchers in this area are in favor of this option. Their arguments are based on the fact that it has not yet been demonstrated that having an elderly child carries health risks. They believe that women should not suffer any discrimination based on their age and that they should depend solely on the mother's health and be able to decide for herself.

Logically, there were many detractors of this theory and they explained why.

  • Increased risk of malformations in the fetus and prematurity
  • Increase in maternal diseases such as diabetes, hypertension ...
  • Higher chance of cesarean section
  • Probability that the child will be orphaned soon

It is clear that this is a debate that has been opened thanks to the new reproductive techniques, and that apart from the scientific implication, the ethics of each one is more important.
