Breastfeeding the children of Haiti

A considerable number of injured in the earthquake in Haiti, among which many children are found, have been transferred to different hospitals in neighboring Santo Domingo. Among them are breastfed babies who are separated from their mothers or have been orphaned. They have been approached by the young Sonia Marmolejos, a Dominican mother who breastfeeds her two-month-old baby, and is breastfeeding the children of Haiti to feed them and comfort them.

One of them is called Orlando Diego. The media say that the child was crying with hunger and dehydration, and that Sonia, shortly before an intervention in which they would correct a cleft in his skull, nursed him.

The father did not understand what the young Sonia offered him but another person acted as an interpreter and the father agreed. The child is normally breastfed by his mother, who fortunately lives, but is admitted to another hospital.

"I felt very happy because the boy was comforted when he was almost inconsolable"

The young nurse in solidarity, who is the mother of six children already, wanted help and had nothing to offer, while other citizens carry food and blankets she lacks resources. But helping the small wounded in this way has meant something very important for her, since she has realized that her contribution is equally important.

“I saw that everyone contributed something and as that was what I could contribute, with that I could. I had never done it. The boy was desperate he was hungry and cold, I find and peladito when they brought him ”

In the Darío Contreras hospital in Santo Domingo there are about 84 Haitians with severe problems, including amputated legs and arms, and of that total there are 20 children located in the best rooms.

“I learned that there were very newborn Haitian children here and I came to see how I could help and I am breastfeeding this child, this is not mine, I have a small one, but I am here helping, giving the breast”

This news, which has touched many people, for their solidarity and simplicity, reminds us of how important it is breastfeeding for the survival of children in emergencies. These of whom we speak, in the hospital, have received comfort and food, but there will be thousands of small survivors in Haiti, who will depend to survive only on the milk that their mothers or other women can give them of their breasts, providing them with safe food and not contaminated
