Demystifying caesarean section after a caesarean section

What has been believed for many years that Routine caesarean section is the safest thing after a C-section is a myth that fades away.

A consensus document made by independent experts from the National Institutes of Health in the United States ensures that having a natural vaginal delivery after experiencing a C-section is perfectly safe and women should have the option to do so.

They argue that "there is no good reason to force a woman who had a C-section to repeat the intervention" when she wants to try to have her baby naturally. In addition, it should be encouraged as 75% of vaginal deliveries after a C-section are successful and pose less risk to the mother and the baby than a new C-section.

The main reason why some experts recommend repeating the C-section is because of the fear that the uterine incision of the previous C-section could be opened due to the pressure of the contractions, however this happens in 1% of cases.

Caesarean sections have become an epidemic in recent years, so it is being reviewed in which cases they are preventable from being routinely practiced. If unjustified cesarean sections are already performed, over duplicate or triple them for the mere fact of having had a previous one, it is foolish. Research has emerged that even considered vaginal delivery viable even after three or more C-sections.

Having had a previous C-section is no longer a reason for the intervention to be repeated. The mother should be offered the possibility of trying labor if she wants to. Even though the delivery ends in a caesarean section, it will have been worth a try.
