Meghan Markle would have hired a doula: what is her role in pregnancy and childbirth

The international media are aware of all the news about the most famous pregnancy of the year: that of the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan markle.

Now, US Weekly says the former American actress She is being advised in her pregnancy for a doula, and she would also be the one who will accompany her in childbirth.

But, What is the role of a doula? How is it different from a midwife?

A duchess who breaks the protocol of British royalty

Meghan Markle's birth plans seem to have little or nothing to do with the tradition of the English royal family. As published by some English media, the duchess 'díscola' has the advice of a doula to accompany her on the final stretch of her pregnancy and even assist her in childbirth.

The person chosen seems to be Lauren Mishcon, 40, mother of three children and granddaughter of the owner of the law firm Mishcon de Reya, who dealt with the separation of Lady Di and Prince Charles in 1996.

This decision has nothing to do with the Windsor's protocol of giving birth in the palace or hospital where princes George, Charlotte and Louis were born.

And is that at 37, Meghan seems to be committed to childbirth and respectful upbringing, even if that means not agreeing with the palace rules.

But in real matters, you can never take anything for granted, since the aforementioned doula has not denied the news when asked by The Sun, to which she simply replied that she will have a lot of work in April, just when it is planned to be born Meghan's first son and Prince Harry, and added that:

"Obviously I don't have the freedom to talk about who, or who doesn't, can be my client."

But also this means that the rumor has spread that the workers of the VIP wing of St Mary's Hospital in London, where the three children of his sister-in-law, the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, were born, are ordered not to take days off during the month of april.

And it is that all the possibilities seem to be open, since at the moment the expected date of childbirth is not known, nor where it will even give birth to the sex of your baby.

In Babies and more Meghan Markle is criticized for touching her pregnant belly all the time

And why not? You might even choose to give birth in the hospital, for medical safety for her and her child, but with the accompaniment and support of the doula.

What is the role of a doula in pregnancy and childbirth?

It is usually a woman, who has already been a mother and accompanies the pregnant woman during pregnancy and childbirth, offering emotional and physical support, but without performing any type of medical intervention.

During pregnancy provides the future mother with information and emotional listening.

During childbirth, it focuses on calming pain naturally (with massages, breathing and relaxation methods) and advise on which position is better to facilitate delivery.

It also accompanies the mother at the beginning of breastfeeding and postpartum.

In Babies and more, what is the difference between a midwife and a doula?

And although their role can help women cope with childbirth more calmly, does not replace the midwife. Each has a different training and jobs: the health expert has six-year academic preparation to assist during dilation and expulsion, control fetal well-being and even attend full birth in low-risk pregnancies, among other functions.

Doulas have knowledge of pregnancy physiology and childbirth and postpartum, but no academic preparation. Their work is included in the strategy of normal delivery care in the National Health System of the Ministry of Health, although their functions and the training they need to perform their work are not specified.

The truth is that, despite the criticisms received from the General Nursing Council, which denounce the professional intrusion of this figure and the risks that it may entail for childbirth care, the continuous accompaniment of a person of trust and support is beneficial for women and for the development of childbirth, provided they are trained health professionals.
