Baby talk: talking like babies

It happens many times that when we start talking to babies we start talking more slowly and intoning much more than usual; is the call baby talk.

Baby-talk (or in English, motherese) is the name used to designate a linguistic subcode used by adults and children over 5-6 years, spontaneously, when they are directed and communicate with younger children.

The characteristics of the baby-talk are intended to improve and control the effectiveness of the child's understanding of the messages, as well as to assume important aids for imitation and language learning.

When we talk to babies we tend to speak more slowly, with more pauses and longer, to raise the tone of voice (we use a more acute register), we take more care of the pronunciation, we are more expressive, our phrases are shorter and simpler, we repeat frequently part or all of the sentence, we use a more limited number of words (in its simplest form and with the greatest number of diminutives), constant references to the context are made while pointing or manipulating the concrete objects with which we interact and we use a greater number of gestures and mimicry.

This adaptation of the language that is made contains an implicit educational process through which the adult expresses his desire to give the child more and more elaborate expressive tools.

This way of speaking to our baby does not hinder or delay the acquisition of language; Unlike: It is a positive and indispensable way to acquire language, since it helps them to focus their attention and begin that communicative exchange that will gradually become more complex.

Finally, I propose a little thing: pay attention to how your family, friends, and even you, talk to your baby.
