The OLPC project (one laptop per child) becomes a tablet

The project OLPC (one computer per student) is a veteran initiative of Nicholas Negroponte that aimed to offer an economic learning device to boost the educational process of kids around the world. The first equipment that was manufactured was a computer, with a cover, keyboard and full connectivity. Now it seems that the intention is to turn it into a tablet. At least that can be seen in this video, a couple of months ago, in which the device looks great with that 8-inch screen, which aspires to grow over time.

The device is called OLPC XO-3 and includes ports at discretion to facilitate connectivity: a USB for peripherals and charging, headphones, microphone and another USB to transfer files. It also has cameras, front and back.

The device is ready to run Linux though Android It also seems that you can equip it. Among the applications, it includes Wikipedia content and is prepared for other manufacturers to install more software. The goal is that the content is accessible whether the device is connected or not, obviously offline will offer what the device is capable of storing.

Between the accessories included, and that can be useful for children depending on the environment in which they are, is a protective silicone cover for the screen. And when the tablet is used, it is placed on the back to protect it and make it easier to hold. I also like the device that includes solar batteries to allow charging. If in the previous OLPC there was a crank to load, in this equipment there is also one that ensures one hour of battery for six minutes of giving the crank.

The OLPC project is a great attempt to bring education to other countries as Negroponte has said numerous times. In my opinion they are projects that go beyond putting a device in a class for children to learn. And therefore they are very complex because they demand political and social changes which are a challenge for the countries in which it is implemented. In any case, the device is not important and the objective is for the kids to learn skills and develop skills so that they can then apply them with the OLPC.
