Today we are going to play a Naval Battle

Naval Battle or Sink the Fleet is a classic game for children (and older) over eight years. Today there are so many commercial versions, and even the possibility of playing with the computer, that we have forgotten that its preparation is as simple as that of Tres en Raya: only sheets of paper, pencil + rubber and a ruler are needed.

Those who read me, you have been children before, and surely many have had a good time with family or friends, trying to sink your opponent's boats, and wishing that the enemy would not guess the position of your fleet. Two players, or two groups of more than one player, a folio for each and in front of them an exciting battle that allows to apply the skills of strategist, and learn to work with coordinates, a challenge.

Lately we are playing quite a lot at home, although there is always time to play a game at the Goose, practice our memory with a game of couples, try to finish a game at Monopoly, or lower children's bingo from the shelf. There are times when they have to settle for the tangram if they don't get game partner / s.

The Naval Battle allows variations because some basic instructions They can be adapted every time we play, but as a general rule:

  • We draw with pencil and ruler a grid of ten coordinates on paper, leaving space to write the references (from A to J, and from one to 10). What we have to draw is a double entry table, so that we understand each other.

  • We draw on one side of the paper the fleet of each one that will be the same for all (The elements can be represented with linked squares or if you have drawing skills with a graphic representation): an aircraft carrier that will occupy five squares, two battleships of four squares, three cruises that will cover 3 spaces, four destroyers of two squares and five submarines that are the smallest, one box).

It is drawn on the sides to be erased or crossed out when the opponent is guessing our positions, so we will know how many troops we have left.

  • Each player or group, remember 2 players or groups, will have their grid drawn and they will place their fleet on the grids, can occupy part of a line vertically or horizontally. The boats do not overlap.

  • The game begins (you can use a dice to decide who starts), each player in his turn states a coordinate, for example A / 7, and the opponent must indicate if he has failed, if he has "touched" (part of the boat is affected ) or if it has "sunk" (we have destroyed a ship).

  • The most exciting thing is when we "play" and we are allowed one more run, trying to guess if the ship is placed horizontally or vertically, and in what sense. When we err we must yield the turn to the opponent.

  • When we fail we mark the box with an X to remember that there the enemy has no ship, and when we are right we can point it out with a circle. The game ends when one of the players sinks the entire enemy fleet.

I hope you have a great time remembering your childhood, of course your children will enjoy, and train their little heads.
