Half of what we eat should be of plant origin

Today we eat more, but this is not synonymous with health, since the quality of the food we eat is worse than a few decades ago. And we have changed the habits of life, and it shows in our diet.

Every time fats have more presence in our diet, which together with sedentary lifestyle, is causing obesity levels to approach those of the United States (figures that we read in our last article on childhood obesity), with the increase in risk of corresponding cardiovascular problems. These issues have been raised in the 1st Workshop on Food and Health organized by Marbú Effective and the Spanish Community Nutrition Society.

In addition to good nutrition, experts recommend performing physical activity at least 30 minutes a day, control body weight and adjust the total fat below 35% (less than 1% trans and less than 7% saturated). “Most of the trans fats we consume do not come from nature and hence the body has a hard time metabolizing them. That is why it is important to avoid them, ”said Dr. Javier Aranceta (president of the SENC).

When we exceed 7% daily intake of saturated fats, for every 1% we exceed these fats, we increase 3% in the risk of cardiovascular mortality

As practical advice, experts advise divide meals and mid-morning or snack time consume a healthy snack. “You can take cookies low in saturated fat by complementing them with a fruit and / or a skimmed yogurt. Thus we are providing the necessary carbohydrates for the body and other nutrients of interest, such as vitamins, minerals and proteins ”

Nutritionist Joy Ngo recommends that “Half of what we eat is of plant origin”. And he adds that "we also have to take into account the portions we eat" (which can be larger in the case of cereals or vegetables, and smaller when fatty foods such as cheese come into play).

Have you thought about the possibilities offered by the vegetable kingdom for our food ?, vegetables, fresh and dried fruits, legumes, cereals, seeds

So the recommendations (otherwise logical) are: pay more attention to what we eat, adjust the total fat below 35%, eat lots of vegetables, fruits and cereals, and exercise regularly.

In short, assume that even if we change our life habits, our diet must also adjust to the health requirements of our body, and this is something we also like to talk about, because we consider it an important issue.
