What is a Homeric hero?

In the extraordinary movie The Quiet Man Michaleen Flynn appeared that always and before the imposing figure of Sean Thornton, played by actor John Wayne, always exclaimed that Homeric! And it is that the behavior of Thornton, a hero who seeks refuge in his native Ireland, was that of a good man that he had fought many battles and that he had decided to retire to rest although his neighbors would not let him do it!

The fact is that after listening to Michaleen Flynn, played by the endearing Barry Fitzgerald, say so many times Homeric! in the movie when I found this poster of Greek Myth Comix via Gregorio Luri's blog, I've been thinking about what a Homeric hero is. The most interesting thing is the blog, Greek Myth Comix, which, according to its author, uses it to explain to its students the concepts and ideas that flow from the Homeric Greek epics and that also makes it very simple and entertaining using images as attractive as the one illustrated in the article.

Why, What is a homeric hero? As the author explains, more than a hero it is a extraordinary warrior with fantastic war skills. And is that a warrior prepared to face the enemy had to be tall, skilled, skilled in handling weapons, basically the spear and the sword, and very good connoisseur of the arts of war. That is, a perfect machine ready to defend itself and defeat the enemy. Perhaps a movie or a comic like 300 has perfectly captured the essence of the warrior willing to sacrifice himself for everyone.

Although Gregorio Luri's blog goes far beyond the vignette and the story of the Homeric hero and it is reasoned that today the hero is guilty because he acts and the honorable victim because he suffers. Although the analysis and conversation that generate this type of reflection I leave it for the readers. For now I am enjoying this blog that I have already incorporated into the blog reader and I hope that I can return to Peques y Más with new and interesting news about the Greeks.
