The family, the family tree

Our children often find themselves in trouble when they are asked about family issues such as, who is your mother's nephew? How many grandchildren does your grandfather have ?, or how many uncles do you have? For some reason, family relationships are resisted in a special way.

When they are between five and six years old, they know perfectly well who is the mother, the father, the brothers, but most of the children have some slight problems to understand what the family of each father is. In order to teach you a little more about who each family member is and how to understand the existing relationships, there are some very appropriate exercises that we show below.

We are going to make a family tree and we will explain to the child how families grow. As a tree grows, the family grows, from the trunk there are two branches (the maternal and the paternal family) and from each branch there are other branches and each branch is a new member of the family. Take for example the paternal grandparents, two photos will serve you, then we have below the photos of their children and their respective partners. In turn we have under each couple, children, grandchildren of grandparents, etc. With this small family tree and explaining the disposition of the family step by step, the child will understand much better who is who. If you can paste the photos on a cardboard accompanying these with arrows, it will help you much more.

Once our small family tree has been developed and after the explanation, we can begin to ask you some questions that even if you fail them, will serve for a better understanding. We must always start with the simplest relationships and links and, as I understand it, expand the family tree.

This helps the child with the understanding and unity of the family bond because, we already know that the family is very important in the life of our child. In addition, if you want to create the family tree on your computer, in which you can include photographs, videos, notes or listings, in this link you can access the program for it.
