Results of the survey What type of delivery do you choose?

A few days ago we launched a survey to know the preferences of our readers (and why not, also of our readers) when it comes to bringing their babies into the world.

The results have been very interesting and, of course, give rise to reflection and analysis. Before we move on to it, I want to thank you for your significant participation that helps us to get to know your opinions better. Now, let's see what the survey has given itself.

The majority of readers, 32%, chose a hospital delivery with epidural but trying to make any other intervention minimal. This means that many women are afraid of suffering pain during childbirth, either because they do not know that there are other methods of analgesia or because they know them, they still prefer the epidural despite their side effects. However, despite choosing the epidural they prefer to minimize or avoid any other type of medical intervention.

22% of respondents also choose a hospital birth without any medical intervention but also do not choose the epidural. I suppose the main reason is to avoid its side effects (difficulty pushing, dizziness, headache, tremor, medical complications, etc.) or because they rely on another type of pain control method.

A fact that has caught my attention is that 20% of respondents choose a water birth in a specialized center. A home birth can also occur underwater, or at least during the dilation phase, but in any case it is curious the high percentage of women who add to the benefits of water to give birth.

Another result that has surprised me is that 13% choose a C-section. Although I consider that it is not an option but an emergency intervention to save the baby from some kind of complication in childbirth, I wanted to include it as an option because the reality is that there are many women who could choose it. In fact there are those who choose it and do it. It would be interesting to know why they choose it to the most natural options, for fear ?, for comfort ?, because you hardly even find out? I would like to have answers because I see it as something negative, however there are those who prefer it and the percentage is not low.

Minor is 7% of respondents who choose to give birth in their own home naturally with the help of a midwife or a doula. I attribute it to the limited information about this type of birth and the mother's fear that some unexpected complication may arise.

On the other hand, almost the same percentage, 6%, the minority of our respondents, choose a medicalized hospital delivery with a package of interventions included (shaving, enema, oxytocin, etc). I suppose that also because of ignorance or because many resign themselves to what the medical protocols have without pronouncing themselves.

I loved knowing your opinions through this open survey (although we have already seen a trend). I thank you again for your participation and of course, we will have more queries on the blog.
