Some "when" for pregnant women (III)

Following the entries we saw a few days ago answering some of the most frequently asked questions that pregnant women ask about their babies, depending on when they happen, today we offer a few more questions with their answers.

The style of the questions is the same, they all start with a "when" and all refer to some maturational milestone of the fetus or baby:

When do bones develop?

After 6 weeks of gestation, the cartilage begins to form. By 12 weeks the bones and the contour of the joints are already formed, however the bones remain cartilage that little by little have to go ossifying to become hard bones.

When is it considered that the baby could survive being born prematurely?

It is considered that 24 weeks gestation is the minimum age at which a baby could survive outside the womb. Despite this, it is possible that the internal organs suffer damage during childbirth and have some physical or mental deficiency.

After week 28 the risks fall and the chances of survival are close to 90%.

When will you adopt a labor-oriented position?

Babies, as a general rule, move quite a bit inside the uterus and adopt different positions. By week 35 or 36, having little space they move somewhat less and adopt the position with which they will leave. However, there are babies who until the last moment do not decide how to present themselves at the time of leaving.

When will you weigh a kilo?

If a few days ago we saw when children weigh 500 grams, today we will see when they reach 1 kg of weight. This it happens approximately in the 28th week of gestation, when it measures approximately 26 cm long.

When will you have fully developed lungs?

One of the great concerns of moms and dads is the time when the lungs are developed, because that means that at the time of birth you will have much better than those babies, usually premature, who must receive medication to quickly mature the airways.

At 37 weeks the cells that cover the airways of the lungs are already formed, as are the multiple ramifications of the lungs.

When will the head be fully formed?

The truth is that this it will not happen inside the uterus, but outside. The baby's brain is surrounded by flat bones, such as adults, with the difference that theirs are not linked together so that they can have the necessary mobility to adapt to the birth canal. In the upper part of the head are the fontanelles, spaces where the bones that remain soft until a few months after birth are joined.

In principle we have responded with this delivery the majority of "when" (at least the most common) that pregnant women usually do.

In the next post we will talk about more "when", but related to moms and their changes during pregnancy.
