Today is International Kiss Day, do you kiss your children in the mouth?

Eating your child with kisses is the national sport between parents, but when we talk about kisses in the mouth, the controversy begins. Some consider that it is not hygienic, others that confuse children, there are opinions for all tastes. Celebrities like David Beckham and Olivia Wilde have been green on the networks for sharing photos kissing their children on the lips.

Taking advantage of the fact that today is the International Kiss Day (if you read the post until the end you will discover why), the childcare company Suavinex has done a survey among Spanish parents asking them about this issue and opinions are quite close.

Kiss in the mouth, a gesture of love

Almost half of the respondents, exactly 49.29%, this type of manifestation of affection is adequate To the kings of the house. However, the percentage drops among practitioners: 47.88% not only seems good, but it passes the comments Olympic and stamped a kiss on the nose of your child whenever you feel like it.

One of the survey participants states:

“It is a gesture of love, love and tenderness. It's something special between us, between my daughters and me. It won't last forever, but it will be something I remember all my life. ”

There are also (7.8%) who practice it, but think it is not appropriate. "Yes I do, but I think it is not suitable: I do not think it is hygienic," says one of them.

These parents may not be entirely wrong. The Spanish Society of Pediatric Dentistry warns in this report that kisses in the mouth are a vehicle of microbe transmission (like those that cause tooth decay) quite effective and encourage us to end this practice "as endearing as it may seem".

In the case of newborns, regardless of whether or not we approve this practice, we have to refrain from kissing them on the mouth (or letting anyone do it) because we can transmit an infection or illness due to the immaturity of their immune system.

Do we confuse children?

Apart from hygiene, there are parents who believe that mouth kisses are reserved for adults and believe that giving them to them can cause confusion: "I don't want you to think that anyone can kiss you."

3.18% of respondents say that they do not, but do not see that it is inappropriate: "It is appropriate if those involved in the kiss feel this way," says a mother. However, it is true that uncomfortable situations can occur, for example, if our son kisses a girl of his class in the mouth because he considers it normal and the girl (or her parents) is uncomfortable.

Others go further and find it totally counterproductive for children to get used to being kissed in the mouth because it could make them more vulnerable to abuse. I see this a bit exaggerated, what really seems negative is to force children to kiss if they don't feel like it.

The Basques, the most launched

The Basque Country is the community where parents give more "piquitos" to their children, ahead of the Canary Islands and Aragon. Despite being neighbors of the Basques, the Navarrese are the least likely to show affection to the children in this way, followed by the Castilian Manchego and the Cantabrians.

And, as promised is debt, there goes the explanation of why Every March 13 we celebrate International Kiss Day. Well, the longest kiss in history is commemorated, which lasted no less than 58 hours. The protagonists were some Thais who broke their own record of 46 consecutive hours, achieved the same date of the previous year. What a quantity of microbes exchanged! And you, do you kiss your children on the mouth?
