For a unique vaccination calendar in Spain

We have already spoken on occasion of the incongruity that there are vaccines calendars so different in a single country. The Spanish Association of Pediatrics (AEP) and the Spanish Association of Vaccination (AEV) have prepared a joint statement in favor of the single vaccination calendar for the entire Spanish territory.

In this document, which arises from the increase in debate about the issue in recent times, the current situation and conditions are analyzed and the creation of the Spanish Vaccine Advisory Committee is proposed.

They make reference to the fact that differences in calendars and complaints about lack of equity have a negative impact on society's perception of vaccination programs and condition attitudes of rejection towards vaccines that jeopardize the feasibility of those programs.

The AEP is the scientific society that has most openly ruled on the need for a common calendar, and for almost a decade it has justified the proposed calendar every year based on scientific arguments. The content of their claims can be summarized in the following paragraph of the introduction:

The Spanish Association of Pediatrics (AEP) and the Spanish Association of Vacunology (AEV) express the need for a common calendar, the first from its transversal and collaborative nature, the second from its historical trajectory, and both from a scientific and pragmatic, adapted to the current reality of the country.

Based on the recommendations of organizations such as WHO, they remind us that a properly functioning health system guarantees equitable access to medical products, not only vaccines but also essential technologies of assured quality, safety and efficacy and a scientifically successful and cost-effective use.

This document also refers to the vaccination situation in Spain, noting that it is not as good as a few years ago and that we run a certain risk that the immunization programs are not effective. Lately we have talked on the blog that disease outbreaks appear due to the partial vaccination of the population:

As in other countries of our socio-cultural environment, critical opinions have been increasing in recent times and events related to the vaccination of human papillomavirus and pandemic influenza have helped put us at a certain risk.

Of course, the main pitfalls that are analyzed in the text are also analyzed. the implementation of a single vaccine calendar would find in its way, such as the continuous review of immunization recommendations or the scarcity of economic resources, the question of financing.

Another of the claims is the creation of a vaccine advisory committee, as such an organ could be key to having a common vaccination program that can voluntarily share all the autonomous communities, without having to give up their powers , and to which scientific societies adhere.

In short, this AEP and AEV document for a single vaccination schedule It shows us that the demands of a unified calendar from different fields are multiplying and that it is the health officials who advocate for this equality based on scientific evidence.
