Why caffeine reduces female fertility

It seems proven that Caffeine reduces the chances of pregnancy in women, although the causes were not known exactly.

The explanation could be in the fallopian tubes. According to a study, Caffeine reduces female fertility because it reduces the muscular activity of the fallopian tubes, which are responsible for transporting the ovules from the ovaries to the uterus.

This is indicated by the conclusions of an investigation carried out with mice by scientists of the School of Medicine of the University of Nevada, in the United States.

To achieve a pregnancy, the ovules need to travel from the ovaries to the uterus, a process that would require small bumps (cilia) that help the ovules float assisted by muscular contractions in the inner walls of the tubes.

If the cells specialized in coordinating muscle contractions (pacemaker cells) are “at rest”, the ovules cannot move through the tubes.

The study, published in the "British Journal of Pharmacology", found that caffeine stopped the function of pacemaker cells in the wall of the mouse oviduct.

According to the director of the study, Professor Sean Ward,

This offers an interesting explanation of why women who usually consume high levels of caffeine often have more trouble conceiving than women who do not consume caffeine. The results also help to better understand how the movement of the ovules towards the uterus occurs and how are the mechanisms that cause certain diseases of the female reproductive tract.

In addition, the causes of ectopic pregnancy can be better understood or pelvic inflammation and sexually transmitted infections can be treated more successfully.

They also remind us of the recommendation of reduce caffeine intake less than two cups a day during pregnancy, there are those who put the limit in a cup and it is even pointed out that the risk of abortion exists, although coffee is taken in moderation.

The study makes no reference to the influence of caffeine on male fertility, but remember that the diet of man also influences pregnancy.

As we see, knowing why caffeine reduces female fertility progress is being made in the knowledge of many other aspects related to the reproductive system and some pregnancy disorders.
