If parents do not know the language of children on the Internet, concern is increased when the children 'browse'

Do you know what any of these expressions used by children mean in their communications through the smartphone, or during an online game, or in a chat? Crema, xoxo, SI2, prem, Host, tqm, dew, nai; Many of you will feel a little sorry to be aware of how language is destroyed. For them they are internalizing codes, and help them communicate in a way that adults don't know (or almost).

About two weeks ago, a study was presented that Ipsos has done for Club Penguin (the virtual world of children number one, and belonging to Walt Disney), it is called 'Parents: from concern to ignorance about the digital reality of children'; and responds to the collaborative effort of Protégeles (Internet Security center for minors in Spain) and Walt Disney. The aim of the research is to know the parents' perception about the use of ICT by their children. The two entities signed an agreement at the headquarters of the European Commission in Madrid to collaborate in their objectives of protecting the child and guaranteeing the security in the use of new technologies.

Parents were asked about 40 terms used by young people, and the answers denote that the parents do not know enough the language that their children use. In fact, only four percent of respondents are able to correctly identify the words tested. This ignorance causes that 65 percent of parents who ignore the meaning of youth language, increase their concern for the navigation of their children.

53% of children between 10 and 12 years of age access social networks and have a profile. Guillermo Cánovas speaks of the fact that at this moment, the generation gap can be made larger with evolutionary changes that involve the brains of children, who if we do not go back, will leave us behind in this. And that does not suit us, because as parents we have the duty to supervise them (more or less according to age) while they are minors

Online security is a hot topic in our society and 95% of the parents interviewed demand their inclusion in school agendas. However, in addition to the necessary training, it is very important that websites frequented by minors have protection mechanisms. We all need reference sites where your children can navigate with all security guarantees. I know that Club Penguin is not the only platform that constitutes a virtual world of free access for children; For example, Mundo Gaturro can also have fun, make friends, play and explore in a safe environment without commercials.

As part of the presentation of the study, there is this video starring the actors of the Violetta series, to which others will be added that will have other Disney Channel stars as protagonists. The actions, which include information sessions in schools, are aimed at raise awareness and educate children about the good use of new technologies.

But here the question is that parents must impose ourselves as an obligation to learn a little more about the way our children relate, and the means they use for it. And that only gets putting ourselves 'to work' (that is, moving around the net or playing with the kids), keeping us informed and opening our eyes to a reality in which it is of little use to configure the parental control of the laptop (something that should be done when there are children); because our children have (or will have) a smartphone that although they do not have contracted data rate will let them connect if they are in a Wi Fi point, in addition to that they also access the Internet with the tablet, and even with the consoles.
