The Department of Education and Culture of the City of Las Rozas promotes the First Municipal League of School Debate

A week ago I was talking about the BBVA school debate league to encourage the development of social skills. Another of the most interesting and very recent school debate activities is the one promoted by the Department of Education and Culture of Las Rozas, whose owner Mercedes Piera, has organized the first edition of the Municipal League of School Debate which ended on December 15, 2013. Seeing the success of the call I am convinced that it will not be the last.

In the video below you can see the extraordinary participation and especially fragments of the final debate in which the students showed their knowledge, arguments, valuable exhibitions and much effort to defend their ideas. What surprised me most is that of the participants in the final, there is only one young man! And everything else is girls. If anyone has doubts about what are the skills that women have, I have no doubt that the ability to communicate, organize ideas and expose them perfectly. The two best speakers in the League were Beatriz, from Santa Mª de Las Rozas and Samuel, from IES El Burgo, which was finally the winning school. Mercedes witnessed the debates and presented the awards after the grand finale and took the opportunity to thank the work of all students and render a special tribute to the work of teachers for your colaboration.

The final was held on the stage of the Joaquín Rodrigo auditorium with the centers IES El Burgo and the Orvalle School. In the video, very complete and recommended during its ten minutes of content, you can see the argument, the debate and the main conclusions as well as statements from many of the participants.

You can also follow the explanations of Mercedes Piera In the following video in which he explains the reasons for the initiative, basically have a practice that has many followers in the Anglo-Saxon model and that in Spain they work exclusively and little in the university field. They are fifteen teams those who participate in the initiative led by the Las Rozas Town Hall through the Department of Education and Culture in which students from 2nd and 3rd of ESO.

He topic of debate chosen for the first call was if Advertising should be limited considering the effects it produces in adolescence although in my opinion the most important thing is how students search, find, organize and debate the ideas that are proposed. In this case the expectations were fulfilled and the young people showed that they can face and come out great to this exercise of argumentation and presentation of ideas.
