Identical twin triplets are born, a strange case every 200 million pregnancies

Reyna Iris Aytana, Priscilla Eris Alely, and Aryadne Liz Eunice are three triplet twin sisters, who were born this week in Argentina, at six months of gestation.

This multiple pregnancy, known as a triamnotic monocorial, only occurs in one in every 200 million pregnancies. It is not a case of in vitro fertilization, but of the natural division of the ovule giving rise to three identical fetuses.

The three sisters are daughters of Micaela Duran and Alejandro Ybañez, a young couple of Comodoro Rivadavia, a town located in the province of Chubut, in Argentine Patagonia.

As reported by the father to Diario Crónica, they were born premature, with six months of gestation, and are currently under observation in incubators "With oxygen and a serum probe, they are being monitored to see how they evolve and the lungs are not very developed."

The mother is in good health.

A very peculiar pregnancy

Multiple pregnancy is very rare. It occurs as a result of the fertilization of an egg and a sperm that were divided into three embryos in the first stage of pregnancy.

In Babies and more The unusual case of MoMo triplets: they shared placenta and bag, and they are identical

All three feed on the same placenta, with three umbilical cords and each baby develops in its own amniotic sac.

The father explains that it is estimated that there is a case every 200 million births: “One in every hundred thousand pregnancies is triple and only 10% is monochromial, as in our case, with very little probability of being trigemelar”.

All pregnancies of two or more embryos are called twin pregnancies, brothers born from the same birth, regardless of whether they are two, three, four, five, six or even seven.

Within the triple twin pregnancy there are in turn three types depending on the amount of fertilized ovules:

  • Three ovules fertilized by two sperm (tricigotic twins), each with its placenta and its bag.

  • Two ovules fertilized by two sperm cells and one of them again divided into two, two share placenta but each has its own bag.

  • A single egg fertilized by a sperm that gives rise to three embryos. They can share only the placenta but not the bag (as in the case of these triplets of Argentina) or placenta and amniotic bag, being a monochorionic and monoamniotic pregnancy.

When they originate from the same ovum and sperm they share the same genetic material and of course, they are the same sex: they are what are known as identical triplets.
