What is the most important pregnancy symptom?

Many women feel worried about the first symptoms of pregnancy, know what they are, how they manifest ... in order to confirm that they are pregnant. It is logical, since it is a very desirable moment, but sometimes impatience makes us forget the most important and obvious pregnancy symptom.

The sign of pregnancy that will put us on notice with enough certainty that we could be pregnant is amenorrhea or absence of a period, that is, when menstruation is delayed and does not arrive.

Amenorrhea is always present in pregnancy. Therefore, in young women who have not had pathological rule absences (indicative of any disease) pregnancy should be considered as a possible and main cause.

At the moment in which a woman conceives, the process of menstruation stops, since its biological function is to engender life through the fertilization of the ovum and the sperm. Menstrual flow is the bleeding that women have when the ovum that has been expelled from the ovary to be fertilized is finally not fertilized.

But if this last phase of the menstrual cycle, called the postovulatory phase, does not occur, it means that the ovule has been fertilized: conception has occurred, a magical moment, and the rule stops, because there are no "remains" to expel .

That is why in principle it is when the rule is delayed about fifteen days when we can perform a pregnancy test, also attending to other symptoms that are likely to change throughout the days and that vary greatly from one woman to another. Instead, what is always fulfilled is the absence of a rule.

I am pregnant and I bleed

Only in extremely rare cases, associated with hormonal treatments or ovarian hyperstimulation, the menstrual cycle can be repeated and a new egg is released while an embryo already exists.

Do not confuse this strange menstruation during pregnancy with other more common phenomena: implantation bleeding or blood loss associated with the risk of abortion.

  • Implantation bleeding occurs in the first weeks of pregnancy, it is a darker flow and less abundant than that of a rule. This slight loss of blood is caused by the nesting of the fertilized egg in the wall of the uterus.

  • Other blood losses during the first trimester or the rest of the pregnancy can be signs of a serious problem, so you have to see a doctor.

I don't get my period but I'm not pregnant

However, amenorrhea does not necessarily mean that the woman is pregnant. There are many factors that can influence the withdrawal or delay of menstruation. Any alteration in the organs that regulate menstruation (central nervous system, hypothalamus, pituitary gland, ovaries, uterus, vagina) can lead to the absence of a period.

So if you have suffered stress, taken a certain medication, have gone through extreme physical situations or modified eating behavior ... it could be a pathological amenorrhea, not a pregnancy indicator. A delay does not always mean pregnancy.

In these cases, the doctor must also be consulted to determine the cause of the amenorrhea and prevent any risk to the woman's health.

If the absence of a period is accompanied by other symptoms of pregnancy, congratulations, you are very likely that there is indeed pregnancy. But we will only be safe after having performed the urine or blood test. Also, if the pregnancy is already around six weeks, transvaginal ultrasound may offer an image of the embryo.

And is that the absence of menstruation is the most important sign of pregnancy. Although, well, there are also many women who know for sure that they are in state even before these tests ... but that is another issue.
